Healthy Hearts
We have been learning about where the heart is, what it does and how we can keep it healthy.  We know we should...
1.  Get at least 1 hour of exercise each day
2.  Eat a healthy balanced diet
3.  Not smoke
Today, Inga and Catriona who are community nurses at the Stromness Surgery came to tell us a bit more about the heart.  They showed us how they check the heart is beating regularly and that the blood pressure is at the right level.  They also told us what happens when the heart stops beating and how it can be started again.
These machines measure how many beats per minute (bpm) the heart is doing

This machine checks the pressure of the blood going around the body

With this machine, you can hear the blood rushing through your veins.  It can be used to listen to a baby's heartbeat in the womb.  You can even hear your pulse in your toe with this machine!
